Amazon organised the release of their new baby, the Kindle Fire, to be just in time for Christmas.  It has been widely reported that 95,000 pre-orders for the newest Kindle were logged within 24 hours of its unveiling. After the initial rush things slowed down and the pre-order rate has been estimated to be running at around 50,000 per day.

Is the Kindle Fire on your Christmas wish list?

It seems pretty clear that there are thousands of people who do want the Kindle Fire for Christmas, either for their own use or to give away as a Yuletide gift.  It doesn’t require the use of a crystal ball to foretell that there will be a second massive wave of demand for the Fire when the first hysterical rush subsides.  There are many cautious people who wouldn’t dream of buying an electronic device without reading a host of owner reviews first.  Then there are the canny people who don’t mind postponing their gratification for a while to allow time for any bugs to be ironed out.

With all those thousands of pre-orders for the Fire, there can be no doubt that the Kindle is a popular product.  But is Amazon’s newest creation in the Kindle range what you really want?

If you already own an e-book reader, you might be tempted to upgrade to what seems to be the latest and greatest product.  If you are about to purchase your first e-book reader, this all singing all dancing miracle might seem to have come along at just the right time for you.

But is it what you really want?  Is it what you really need?

I won’t go into details of all the wonderful features of Amazon’s Fire, you can read them on the Official Kindle Website – you might as well get the information straight from the horse’s mouth, that way you will know that it has not been distorted or exaggerated. The Kindle Fire has been dubbed an “iPad killer” and its various applications mean that it has more in common with the iPad than with the other members of the Kindle family.  Indeed, some reviewers see the Fire as a sort of iPad “lite”.

For the purpose of this exercise we can assume that this new device will be capable of everything as per its publicity.  The question you need to consider is whether you will actually want to use all the features.  If you bought an e-book reader instead of, or in addition to, an iPad, what prompted this decision?

If you simply want a device that will enable you to read electronic books comfortably, you need look no further than the Kindle or Kindle Touch.  They are slim enough to carry around in your pocket or handbag. They have the most eye-friendly screen for reading that has been invented to date.  Their light weight (they weigh less than a paperback book) means you can hold the device in one hand and read for hours without discomfort.

If you chose your e-reader on the basis of small dimensions, light weight, low price, and battery life, the earlier versions of the Kindle beat the Fire on all counts.  The Fire is bigger than the older generations of Kindle (excluding the DX) and its weight is more than double the original Kindle.  Its battery life is a fraction of the straightforward e-readers.

For anyone relying on an e-book reader for entertainment while travelling, battery life is a big consideration.  The battery life of the earlier Kindles is quoted in weeks and months, but with the Fire you are looking at a mere 8 hours of reading or 7.5 hours video play on a fully charged battery.

Personally, I don’t see the Fire as the new generation of Kindle, I view it more as a side branch of the family. It isn’t further evolved, it is simply different.  If you are an avid reader (particularly if you want to read e-books while travelling), you will probably conclude that the Kindle Fire is not the ideal Christmas gift for you.

Small fashion dolls are a popular gift for little girls. If you are tempted to try mixing and matching accessories for dolls, you need to bear in mind that the height of each range of dolls varies. The heights of the current popular small dolls are as follows.

Tallest is Barbie at 11.5 inches;

Disney Princess is the same height at 11.5 inches tall;

Moxie Girlz are 10.6 inches tall;

Monster High Fearleading Dolls are 10.5 inches tall;

Bratz Dolls are 10 inches tall;

Disney Fairies Best Friends Forever dolls are 9 inches tall;

Polly Pocket at 3 inches tall is the smallest.

These are the most popular of the range of small dolls. There are also numerous Disney dolls with very similar names and they vary in height from about 11.5 inches to 20 inches. If a Disney character doll is on your Christmas gift list, take care; you need to make sure you have the exact name of the item. For instance, there is a Rapunzel doll at 11 inches tall. There is a “Tangled” Rapunzel at 16 inches and a soft “Tangled” Rapunzel at 11.5 inches.

There is also a Disney Princess “toddler” that is much shorter than the fashion doll.

Barbie has a little sister, so you can’t just pick up a box with the Barbie logo containing a doll.  You need to double check whether you have Barbie, her little sister or even one of her friends.

Buying dolls as a gift is not a simple as it might seem and getting it right is essential!

Any serious attempt to discover which is the best ebook reader on the market will quickly narrow the choices down to just two of the many devices currently available. These two are, of course, the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Nobel Nook. They are not by any means the cheapest, but neither are they the most expensive.

Although it is easy to narrow the field to just the two contestants, if is much harder to declare one to be the outright winner. There are, of course, pros and cons attached to both these e reader devices. But, overall, they are very similar in many respects. The manufacturers’ specifications for the nook and the Kindle reveal them to be similar in size and weight. The screens are similar in size. The Kindle has greater storage capacity, but the Nook’s memory can be expanded by use of a memory card. You can use either one to read newspapers and magazines as well as books.

So, how do you decide which is the best e book reader? The decision as to which of the e-readers is the best one eventually has to be made on the basis of personal preference. One major difference between the Kindle and the Nook is that the Kindle has push button controls while the Nook has a touch screen interface. The way these work do not affect the speed of page turning or any other function of the devices, it simply comes down to picking the one you prefer to use.

The Nook and the Kindle both have massive support from their fans and this keeps the competition going strong. The closeness of the competition is a positive thing from the consumer’s point of view because it ensures the manufacturers constantly strive to outdo each other. Each new generation of the Nook and the Kindle has been refined in an effort to win over a majority share in the market. The strength of the competition has also served to keep prices down. This can only be good news for the prospective e-book buyer.

Did we forget the Ipad?

No, but its place in a battle for the title of best e-book reading device is somewhat uncomfortable. It’s rather as if a third party has been pushed into a boxing ring where a contest is already in progress. The Ipad is unquestionably brilliant in all sorts of ways. It has things the other contenders lack. It has color where the Kindle has only black, white and shades of gray. The Ipad has video where the best the Nook can manage is images. If we were to compile a list of the Ipad’s features, it would look as if it should pound the other two contestants into the ground without any difficulty. But it doesn’t really belong in an e-reader contest.

It is true that the Ipad has all the functionality you could want from an e-reader device. It has a good size screen for reading, it can download electronic books without needing a separate connection to a computer. However, its real strength lies in all the other things it can do. If you simply look at how the Ipad performs as an ebook reader and compare that aspect with the Nook and Kindle, it does not look so much like a serious contender.

There are three areas where the Nook and the Kindle beat the Ipad. The first thing to note is the weight difference. While the Nook weighs slightly more than the Kindle, the Ipad weighs almost three times as much as the Kindle. This extra weight makes it uncomfortable to hold while reading for any length of time. The second point is that Amazon and Barnes & Noble offer a much larger number of electronic books than are available for Ipad users, and the book prices are generally lower. The third thing to consider is that the Ipad is quite significantly more expensive than the other two rivals.

This is a case where you need to decide whether it is better to buy a device that is dedicated to doing one thing really well. Do you really want an e-reader that can play music and videos? If you are primarily looking for an e-book reader, it is probably not a good idea to buy a device that does many things well but that has definite limitations when used as an e-reader. You could find yourself paying for additional functions that you will never use.

Kids love pocket toys. The fascination with these miniature toys first seizes children when they get to around the age of four years. These toys can contain extremely small parts, so they are generally not suitable for kids any younger than four.

The love of tiny playsets appears mainly in little girls. Some little boys will show a passing interest in these tiny toys, but this is usually just a brief experiment and is soon abandoned in favour of more rugged playthings. Little girls, on the other hand, never seem to outgrow their fondness for pocket pals.

The first pocket toys to catch the fancy of very young children are usually the tiny animals. Miniature families of ponies or puppies are the most popular ones. At around the age of five or six, pocket dolls are what every little girl wants. The appeal of puppies and ponies does not wear off entirely, but the craze for dolls and everything doll related comes to the fore.

As kids get a little older, they hanker after accessories for their pocket pals. There is no shortage of accessories to satisfy the needs of the various pocket size creatures. If puppies need a bath or ponies need a stable, these items can be obtained with no trouble. If a pocket size doll needs an almost microscopic hair brush, you will be able to get one easily (along with a whole set of essential grooming items).

As little girls grow up, the tiny treasures of their childhood don’t get left behind entirely. Minuscule playthings become collections to be displayed along with the cuddly toys they can’t bear to part with. When girls reach the too old for toys stage, they don’t lose their love of pocket size items. Instead of pocket dolls and pocket pets they have key ring charms and pencil toppers.

Miniature items continue to appeal to girls even into adulthood. If you have any doubts about this, all you need to do is check out the popularity of dolls houses. Those built to scale models with authentic period furnishings and fittings are mostly bought by adults for adults. The vast majority of those adults are women. Another example of this feminine love for dainty things is the popularity of collectible ranges of tiny shoes and hats.

Little boys don’t have the same love of pocket toys. The closest thing they have are probably the little matchbox size vehicles. But the interest in collecting miniature items – even vehicles – does not endure into adulthood. Many men retain an interest in model railways. But even this does not come close to the way women feel about miniature items. The interest in scale model railways is more to do with the intricacies of engineering than the smallness of the models. Men who love model railways want them to be working models.

Kids have more choice of toys than any previous generation. There is an enormous array of electronic devices to tempt youngsters. There are even computer games tailored for pre-schoolers who can’t read. But one of the top items on every little girl’s wish list will be a set of pocket puppies or pocket dolls.

The Squinkies Cupcake Surprise Bakeshop works in a similar fashion.  There is very little difference between this and the Gumball Surprise Playhouse except that the theme here is related to cupcakes.  If you are thinking of buying a Playhouse for your children’s Squinky community, there would not be any need to buy both.  These two toys are so similar that the recipients wouldn’t gain much extra fun by having both of them.

There are other Squinky toy playsets, but these two are the best and definitely the most popular.  The others don’t seem to be quite so robust.  They might be fine for older children who are dedicated collectors.  The Squinkies Palace Surprise offers a neat way of displaying a growing Squinky collection.  However this and the other accessories might not last long in the hands of little ones.

Squinkies would be a hit with any child as a Christmas gift.  The manufacturers recommend them for ages 4-14 (the small parts make them unsuitable for toddlers).  Two other great things about Squinkies is that they are inexpensive and they don’t make any noise.

Which Kindle accessories do you really need?  The truth is that none of the accessories are actually essential.  When you buy a Kindle, it comes with everything you need right there in the box.  There are, however, some nice little extras available that would make great stocking fillers for a Kindle owner.

Which Kindle accessories would be nice to own?  There is a huge choice of merchandise designed to make the e-reader experience more pleasurable.  If you are toying with the idea of buying a Kindle accessory as a Christmas gift, you will be spoilt for choice.  Better still, you won’t have to spend a fortune.  The range of accessories includes Kindle designer covers with huge price tags.  But you can also get very useful items in a more modest price range.   Here is my pick of low cost Kindle accessories:

The range of Kindle Skins is amazing.  They designs range from cute to scary.  Just to whet your appetite, the list of designs includes the following:  Funky, pink and pretty, girly flowery, wood effect, plaid, Temple of Doom, Van Gogh Starry Night and matt black.

Kindle skins are a style statement but they also serve a practical function.  A Skin offers an inexpensive way to protect your device while also showing the world a glimpse of your personality.  Skins can be purchased for about half the price of the average leather cover, and a mere fraction of one of the designer range covers.

2.  Kindle Jackets

If you want to project a more sober image, a plain colored Kindle Covers could go on your accessory wish list.  There are jackets made of durable synthetic materials while other covers are made of leather.  There are jackets in a variety of colors.  You can choose from gorgeous shades that include pastel blue and a lovely apple green, or classic black.  Some of these Kindle covers include a pocket to store a special light.  Other jackets have built-in lights (these are my favorites).  For readers who are fond of outdoor pursuits, there are specially designed protective Kindle padded, splash proof jackets.  These feature a read-through clear vinyl cover and give screen and button protection against sand and moisture

Avid readers will consider a Kindle reading light to be an essential.  As the screens are not backlit, you need to have a good light to read by (just the same as reading a paper page).  The lights that come built into Kindle jackets are useful, and are great for traveling.  But the separate clip-on lights give a more even illumination of the page.  The LED light stays cool, no matter how long you spend reading, and it is not tiring for the eyes.  Look out for lights with variable brightness settings.

A full charge of a Kindle battery lasts a long time.  But if you are traveling, or are just inclined to forget little things (eg charging your electronic devices), this little gadget will be a blessing.

The Bakugan Dragonoid Colossus is actually made of five smaller Bakugan Battle Brawlers that can be combined into the larger Dragonoid. Each smaller piece enters the field of play and is its own character. However, if all goes well, the Bakugan Dragonoid Colossus can become a huge character and a real threat during battle.

However, the Bakugan Dragonoid Colossus is more than just a few separate characters that can be made into a larger one. It also comes with fours ability cards and one gate card. Again, these cards each have an effect on the outcome of each play. Gate cards are placed on the board, according to the rules of the game, and the smaller Bakugan are rolled onto the board. If one lands on a gate card (which is magnetized) the Bakugan will open up and become ready to do battle.

The Kindle is so small and light it goes just about everywhere I do. You can slip a Kindle into your jacket pocket or your purse and have it handy to read in queues, in waiting rooms, over coffee, on the bus. And you don’t have to worry about the battery running down; it lasts for 10 hours of reading before you need to recharge it.

There are other e-book readers on the market, but the Kindle beats them on every feature including size, weight and memory capacity. Being part of the Amazon company is an added bonus. Amazon offers getting on for 2 million books for download to the Kindle.

Amazon carries so many books in digital format you won’t have a problem finding a book you want to read. When were you last in a bookstore with 2 million books to choose from? Digitally stored literature is, of course, much cheaper than buying books even in paperback form. Downloading books avoids postage and packing charges.
